The Issue with Buttons
May. 22nd, 2014 07:38 pmMost of the time, UNIT was a fun job. She was able to teach them a lot about alien life as well as keep them from getting too gun happy. But every once in a while, people did stupid things. Like push buttons. Why everyone had to push unknown big red buttons she didn't know. But they did. And every time they did, something bad happened.
There was the time the big red button on an alien artifact deleted all their data. There was the time the big red button created chickens that they then had to spend hours rounding up. And there were all those times that the big red button sent Martha somewhere in time. It wasn't usually a problem. She'd find somewhere quiet, call the Doctor, and get back in time to berate whomever had pushed the button for sending her back to the French Revolution or wherever she went.
Today, sadly, was different. Today, when Private James pushed the big red button, Martha found herself whisked away to the outskirts of a cotton plantation near sunset. And based off the clothes, the men with whips, and the bodies of other black people picking cotton, Martha was not going to have a good time of it here.
She took off running just as one of the overseers caught sight of her and gave chase. She had a good head start, and made it to the edges of the woods. Looking back to see how much farther she had to go though, Martha realized it was a lost cause. They'd set the dogs out too. She just had to get rid of her mobile. Still sprinting, she found a small hollow in a tree. Looking back, she realized she was out of sight of the men still. Martha tossed her mobile in along with some twigs and leaves. She'd just have to sneak out and get it later, because right now there was not enough time to call the Doctor...
Five minutes later, Martha found herself beaten, shackled, and heading back to the plantation she'd run from. She didn't know how she'd get out of this one.
